Executive Summary — What is MassONE?
Massachusetts Online Network for Education (MassONE) is the Commonwealth's set of web-based tools and resources designed to support PreK12 standards-based teaching and learning in Massachusetts.
Online K12 Community
MassONE brings together all of the Massachusetts students, teachers, and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education staff in one online community. MassONE makes it easy to communicate and collaborate, share educational resources and augment classroom instruction safely and securely.
Classroom Sharing
Teachers can share homework, assignments, and learning materials with their students, allowing students to access them at school, at home, at the local library or anywhere they can access to the Internet. Each teacher's virtual classroom is private, viewable only by the teacher and students of that classroom.
Students Missing School — Staying Connected
MassONE makes it possible for teachers to support students who are home sick by making available copies of assignments and projects in online classroom folders. In addition, the Discussion Forums enable teachers to engage students in debates, collect samples of student responses, and track student learning over the school year. As a result, students who miss school do not need to fall behind their peers and can stay connected to school, even when they are absent.
Lesson Plans and Teaching Resources
MassONE supports teachers by providing powerful search tools that provide access to a rich collection of standards-based lesson plans authored by teachers, researchers, and publishers. Teachers can also browse Department of Elementary and Secondary Education documents and standards-based curriculum resources quickly from any Internet-connected computer.
Student Resources
There are folders for students containing resources for assistance with homework, research websites, e-books, and other valuable support information that can be used by students.
Personal "Locker"
Teachers and students can use MassONE to store their school files including lesson plans, homework, portfolio materials and more. By storing these resources in MassONE, teachers and students can retrieve them from home, from any classroom, or even from the local library.
Discussion Forums
Often students don't get the chance to participate fully in class discussions, either because they are shy or because they need more time to formulate a response. MassONE gives every student an opportunity to respond to questions in the Discussion Forums. Students can answer on their own time, achieving a better quality of dialog with their teacher and classmates.
A Cost-Effective Resource for Schools
MassONE is operated by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and is available to schools at no charge. Using MassONE instead of costly subscription-based services allows districts to allocate more of the funds for other learning resources and staffing priorities.
